Both Roles Needed (Steeple 2016.03)
In mid-February I attended the Eastern Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, and had the opportunity to present on the many ways in which I have employed technology here at Edwards Church. I was also asked to be a part of a round table discussion on musical community entitled “Saving the World Through Singing.”Preparing for that conversation and working toward my commissioned ministry of music have allowed me to reflect a bit on something my mentor Sue Ellen Page says in her ministry: The congregation is the first choir. My interpretation of that powerful message suggests not a literal choir, but rather serves as a reminder that we are all in this ministry together whether we actually sing the Sunday anthems or we listen to them. At a busy time like Lent, I am truly grateful to be a part of a congregation that seems to agree instinctively with this belief of mine. We love music here at Edwards Church. As Lent draws to a close, we will hear a few sung settings of the Lord’s prayer, and a our Palm Sunday and Easter services will include some of the most uplifting music you’ll hear all year. Come, join in the singing or be a part of the “first choir”! Both roles needed.
