Christmas Time’s A-coming (Steeple 2015.12)
I just love that, as a church musician, I’m required to think about Christmas music for several months prior to the singing of it. Growing up, there was a strict policy in our home about not playing any records or tapes until after Thanksgiving dinner. But now that it’s a job requirement… well, sorry Mom. The choir has been working hard for several weeks now, and have two wonderful programs scheduled as special music Sundays. Additionally, the first two weeks of Advent include special music of their own. On the Fence, our church’s country/bluegrass band will lead the service on Christmas Sunday, December 20, and will tease this service on December 6, when they accompany the anthem “I Hear the Prophet Callin'”. The theme of our choral service on December 13 is Mary, mother of Jesus, including settings of historic Marian texts (the Ave Maria and Magnificat), and a series of reflections and scripture readings. There’s still a chance to get involved in the choir this holiday season (though time is running out). Please let me know if you would like to join in the joyful noise!
