Choir Pin Recognition Program Kicks Off
On Thursday, December 18, 2014, I presented the following speech to the choir. For those who couldn’t make it that night, this will explain the gift you’ll receive when I see you next!
For those of you who’ve been here a while, you know that at our final rehearsal of the fall, I usually give out a small gift for your home or Christmas tree and bumble my way through an improvised speech. But, tonight, we’re doing something a little bit different, I’ve even got notes. I’ve had this idea for a while now, and as my gift to you this year, with Debbie’s help, I have gotten each of you a small, locally-handmade pewter pin to wear on your choir robe stoll as a reminder of your dedication and commitment to the group. Everyone gets one when they first start singing with us. And the one that you’ve earned is in your envelope tonight. But this isn’t just a one-time gift, this is the start of a new program here at Edwards Church. You are holding a changing pin, and every year, anyone who has earned a new one will be upgraded.
In lieu of spoiling the surprise by talking to you directly, I’ve done research through our annual report library this fall, and discovered the first time that each of you was mentioned as a member of the choir. Five years after your first mention of service to the choir, we will replace your pin with a new one. Open your envelope now but keep the contents private, just for fun. I want to honor each of you for your outstanding years of service. Bear in mind that, since annual reports operate on the calendar year, and we tend to think of our service in terms of program years beginning in September, the number should be accurate plus or minus six months, . If you believe you should have a different number, please let me know, and it can be swapped, we have extras of each. In the spirit of this community, I’m not judging anyone’s commitment, this pin honors the amount of time since your first appearance, so if you have sung with us throughout the years encompassed, it counts!
And so, tonight is a sort-of correction to get the process started. Next year we will reward only a few of you with a newly-earned five-year pin. Drum roll!
Wearing the five year pin, we have Rob and Jason, Nicola, and me.
Wearing the ten year pin, we have Ric C. and Karen.
Wearing the fifteen year pin, are Jeannette and Debbie.
Wearing the twenty year pin, we have Cindy and Bryan.
And, wearing the most highly coveted of all Edwards Church choir pins, the 25 year pin, we have Jane, Marge, Len, Rick R., and Don.
And a special recognition is due to Sarah and Jordan for beginning the process with Edwards Church, both this year. We look forward to you wearing a five-year pin before we know it.
Choir is one of the most rigorous services you can perform at Edwards Church, and marvelously a great number of you serve in other highly visible capacities as well. When I count my blessings, every one of you features prominently. If it weren’t for you all, my ministry here would be that of a cantor. Thank you for coming on this journey with me. I’m still a newcomer in this group, as my five-year pin displays, and I have the utmost respect and appreciation for all of you who have come many years before me, and have stuck by me since my arrival.
